You must have heard of Eltz Castle. Situated just a few kilometres from the Moselle in Moselkern, the castle adorned the 500 DM note for many years and invites you to come and visit. Thanks to its secluded location, surrounded on three sides by the Elzbach, it was never conquered or destroyed by enemy troops. During a tour, you can immerse yourself in the life of the castle and experience how difficult it was in the Middle Ages. Many other castles and ruins along the Moselle and in the bordering valleys invite you to come and visit. Roman hilltop fortifications were often the first sites to be constructed in the Middle Ages, particularly in the Middle Moselle and Terrassenmosel regions.

The main objective of the strategically favourable location in the Middle Ages was to be able to defend well, hence why today they provide visitors with a particularly good view over the valley and over the Eifel and Hunsrück mountain ranges. Adventure-packed fables and stories, which must be experienced on-site, can be found on many of the walls. For this purpose, there are a great number of castle festivals, at which such constructions are brought back to life. Medieval craftsmen, jugglers and musicians take you back to the early times and present their trades. Into the bargain, you can enjoy the wonderful views with a glass of Moselle wine: in many castles, you can stop off in a wine tavern or the castle pub. In some places, even living in a castle is possible when rooms or holiday apartments in the castle grounds are offered.

Special highlights include guided tours specifically for children around several buildings, in which nobody is allowed to be scared of the castle ghost; authentic clothing in the form of costumes as the damsel of the castle or as a proud knight is included. Authentic delicacies can be enjoyed at a knight’s meal where you can experience the table manners of knights and lords of castles first-hand. Go on a journey of discovery and enjoy an excursion into the Middle Ages. Some castles can only be visited with a guided tour. In others, you can go on a journey of discovery yourself after you have paid your “path duty” (i.e. entrance fee). Castle ruins are generally freely accessible.
